Our Goals

Building on past successes and lessons learned, over the next five years Viet-AID seeks to:

Develop high-density, green housing around the Fields Corner T Station that provides mixed-income options for low- and moderate- income families. A sustainable transit oriented development will meet the needs of alternative to driving transportation options, will increase accessibility to employment opportunities, and will expand the community’s customer base to support neighborhood businesses

Assist community members accumulate and expand family wealth through sustainable business and home ownership opportunities.
Engage formerly disengaged community members, including Vietnamese immigrants and long-term residents, by planning and implementing a community mobilization initiative to build a vibrant, diverse and sustainable Fields Corner community.

Equity Goals: (i) New affordable housing units will be available for low-income and minority residents; (ii) Fields Corner and Vietnamese residents will be provided with access to housing opportunity, which will help combat race, ethnicity, and income segregation; (iii) Minority small business owners and homebuyers will have increased resources to build wealth for future generations.

Sustainability Goals: (i) Viet Aid will redevelop previously developed, polluted and brownfield sites into housing or mixed-use developments; (ii) New housing projects will use healthier building materials and energy efficient building technologies; (iii) Affordable housing developments will be located within 1/2 mile of transit stations; (iv) Viet Aid will retrofit/weatherize old homes and commercial buildings ; and (v) Viet Aid will assist neighborhood businesses – especially nail salons – to adopt green business practices.

Our Efforts

Fifteen years ago, Viet-AID, mobilized the Vietnamese community to plan and develop the nation’s first Vietnamese community center. The services provided in the Vietnamese Center and the projects Viet-AID has built, provide affordable housing to over 100 families and individuals annually; deliver critical child care, senior and youth services to thousands of immigrant families; build a critical customer base for over 200 neighborhood businesses; and increase civic participation and grassroots leadership development among Vietnamese immigrants.

Green and Affordable Development
To date, Viet-AID has transformed formerly vacant and brownfield sites into a community center, a community garden and five housing and mixed-use projects – all located within a 1/2 mile radius of the Fields Corner station.

Homeowner Support Services
Viet-AID’s multiple strategies aim to maintain a healthy urban fabric and to support a resilient Fields Corner. To this date Viet-AID has assisted xx residents through the first time homebuyers program to buy their first home in the community and has helped xx residents through the foreclosure prevention program to avoid foreclosure.

The Potential

Fields Corner Community
Fields Corner has long been a dynamic and diverse neighborhood, with a sustained history of welcoming many waves of new immigrants to the city of Boston. These multiple cultures and experiences have converged and overlapped, creating a rich collective narrative that draws from the Irish, African-American, Cape Verdean, Caribbean, Jewish and Vietnamese communities.

For residents from all backgrounds, the neighborhood’s strategic location on key public transportation circuits has historically been a large draw. Almost immediately after the City of Boston’s full annexation of Dorchester in 1870, Fields Corner became one of the nation’s first ‘streetcar’ suburbs. The newly installed transportation infrastructure spurred transit oriented development with residential settlement oriented around the neighborhood’s new connectivity to central Boston. Businesses opened along Dorchester Avenue to cater to increased commuter traffic. The opening of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Red Line station at Fields Corner in 1927 further connected the neighborhood to the city.

Fields Corner today is a demographically diverse community with a strong network of institutions. It hosts a vibrant business community that serves the immediate neighborhood and the greater Boston. With over xx businesses, a very active main streets organization, over xx Vietnamese businesses in the extended area, and numerous community institutions, Fields Corner has all the seeds of a vibrant neighborhood with a strong social infrastructure.

Accessibility
One if the greatest assets of Fields Corner and the backbone to sustainable development is the accessibility and mobility that the Fields Corner T stop, recently renovated in 2005, provides. Working families living in Fields Corner can easily access the city’s employment zones. A person leaving in Fields Corner can access almost any part of the city and its employment zones in less than 30 minutes.
