Overview:

The Vietnamese American Initiative for Development (VietAID) was created in 1994 by community leaders to provide comprehensive economic development programs and services to reduce poverty and alienation in the Vietnamese community of Fields Corner (a Dorchester neighborhood). VietAID’s mission is to build a strong Vietnamese community and a vibrant Fields Corner through the following measures: promoting civic engagement; building affordable housing and commercial development; providing small business technical assistance and micro-enterprise development; and offering high quality child care services. VietAID’s primary programs today include a bilingual preschool, an afterschool and summer program for children grades 1-8, a youth leadership development initiative for high school students, management of affordable housing units, housing counseling courses, and community organizing and engagement.

Job Summary:

The Development & Communications Coordinator is responsible for carrying out key fundraising and communications tasks for the organization, including grant writing, annual appeals, fundraising events, donor relations, individual donor stewardship, social media communications, newsletters, and marketing materials.

Major Responsibilities:

The position will report to the Executive Director. The position’s primary responsibilities include:

Development: 70%

  • Conducting the full range of activities required to research foundations and prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to private foundations and corporate sources to support VietAID’s mission.
  • Working with VietAID’s Director of Community Relations and Board of Directors to develop strong relationships with community supporters.
  • Designing and executing a strategy for increasing contributions of individual donors.
  • Collaborating with the Director of Community Relations to plan and implement periodic fundraising events, including events to raise the profile of VietAID and celebrate Vietnamese community and tradition in Boston, and a major event each Fall.
  • Working with program staff on providing reports to funders as outlined in their contracts.
  • Maintaining the organization’s DonorPerfect and Constant Contact databases to track individual, foundation, and corporate donors and funding opportunities.

Communications: 30%

  • Ongoing support of social media engagement strategy, including maintenance of relevant content and periodic posting on VietAID’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts.
  • Supporting maintenance of the organization’s website, including posting relevant updates.
  • Updating VietAID’s communications materials as needed.
  • Writing a quarterly newsletter with key organizational updates.
  • Coordinating with Director of Community Relations with development of VietAID’s annual report and programming outreach materials.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor or advanced degree.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience and proven track record of success in fundraising and communications.
  • Proven ability to identify, cultivate, and sustain relationships with individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  • Strong skills in foundation research and grant writing.
  • Experience using social media platforms preferred.
  • Experience with database use and maintenance preferred.
  • Track record of commitment to community development, social justice, and/or immigrant communities.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-starter who is comfortable leading projects on his/her own as well as in teams. Strong interpersonal skills and collaborative, energetic approach. Good organizational skills.
  • Experience working in low-income and multi-ethnic communities.

Job Description

The Vietnamese American Initiative for Development (VietAID) provides comprehensive economic development programs and services to alleviate poverty and advance civic participation in the Vietnamese and broader population in the Fields Corner community of Dorchester. The organization operates a community center, which serves as a hub for the Vietnamese and Fields Corner communities, houses a child care program, after-school and youth leadership programs, and a number of professional offices including our own. VietAID is looking for an experienced Director of Building Maintenance & Security to oversee all maintenance and security activities related to the community center building and grounds.
The ideal candidate will be well-organized and able to optimize the use of space and equipment while reducing operating costs. The goal is to manage the building as efficiently and securely as possible in order to best serve the community and the agency.

Job Responsibilities

1) Building Maintenance

• Address building maintenance issues as they arise, repairing directly where feasible, and contracting with the appropriate vendors to ensure timely repair, with a mind toward value optimization.
• Monitor the status of HVAC, security, plumbing, elevator, and other building systems to ensure inspections and replacement occur on a regular schedule.
• Identify needed capital improvements. Acts as project manager for ongoing capital improvements. Creates and maintains a capital management plan, working with consultants as necessary.
• Arrange and oversee contracts for snow clearance, landscaping, pest control, and other regular building management needs.
• Communicate regularly with staff at VietAID programs and tenant organizations to determine any facility-related needs or deficiencies affecting their operations.
• Coordinate with volunteer staff to optimize the benefits of their contributions
• Manage storage and/or disposal of materials produced by VietAID and its affiliate programs, in coordination with the appropriate employees and tenants.
• Coordinate with the office manager to ensure seamless management of tenant and facility space, maintenance contracts such as snow clearance, and other duties.
• Coordinate with the Director of Real Estate Development regarding third-party lease arrangements.
• Manage opening and closing of building during the week and on weekends.

2) Security

• Responsible for security operations and building access, both in terms of hardware and standard operating procedures among staff.
• Ensure proper training of volunteers and/or staff who interact with visitors and participants entering the building.
• Establish and enforce protocols to prevent unwarranted entry into the building.

Hours: 20-30 hours per week to be arranged

Qualifications:
3-5 years of experience in Maintenance/Facility Management. Knowledge of fire and building safety standards and procedures; general knowledge of contracting and building maintenance, including plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems. Computer literacy required. Experience working with building security a definite plus. Prior experience working in a social services environment also a plus.

Other Considerations:
Fluent Vietnamese a definite plus. Spanish speaking ability also desirable.

2016: Hiring Youth Program Social Worker

VietAID Scholarly Program for Youth (VSPY): VSPY is an After School program during the academic calendar and a day Summer Camp during July through August providing academic support and enrichment activities to predominantly Vietnamese American youth, local youth from Dorchester, and VietAID’s housing developments.

Position Overview: Social Worker will coordinate the socio-emotional learning program for first through eighth graders in VietAID Youth Program, provide general social work services to youth and support the overall program with the socio-emotional wellness activities for our youth. This is a part-time, one-year position starting with After School from September through May and summer day camp during July and August.

Start Date: September, 2016

Responsibilities:

Facilitation and Curriculum:
• Create and implement a social-emotional learning curriculum for fifth through eighth grade youth.

Socio-emotional Support/Counseling:
• Facilitate individualized social emotional support and counseling for a group of youth
• Work with group leaders and program staff to better support youth socio-emotionally by providing training and technical assistance
• Conduct one-on-one sessions with students as needed, for support
• Create, implement, and track behavior improvement plans

Case Management:
• Provide referrals for participants and families as necessary
• Work collaboratively with staff to identify children and families who are in need of mental health or outside case management services

Program Support:
• Conduct classroom observations to assess the needs of individual students and overall programs
• Assess staff training needs around socio-emotional learning and behavior management and provide appropriate training to meet those needs

Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW)
• Ability to facilitate individual and group work.
• Have experience with social emotional learning curriculum development and implementation.
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Effective planning, organizational, and time management skills and keen attention to detail.
• Ability to multi-task and to respond flexibly to a fluid and evolving program environment.
• Commitment to social justice and cultural responsiveness; knowledge/experience working with bilingual, immigrant youth and youth of color for at least two years
• Bilingual in Vietnamese is preferred/helpful

2016-2017: Hiring educators for afterschool youth program

2016-youth-hiringProgram Description:
VietAID is running an afterschool youth program for seventy five students in 1st through 8th grade for the academic year 2016-2017. We are seeking responsible, caring and enthusiastic people to serve as educators for our program. We provide daily snacks, homework tutoring, games, recreation and enrichment activities for our students. We are located in the Vietnamese-American Community Center at 42 Charles St. in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood.

Job Hours, Pay Rate, and Dates:
The program will run from Monday October 3rd, 2016 – May 26th, 2017 on days when Boston Public Schools are in session and training begins the week of September 19th-September 23rd. Staff shifts are generally from 3:00pm-6:00pm, with occasional flexible hours for our monthly required staff meetings and prep time. Teachers will work minimum two to maximum five days per week, depending on staffing and availability. At the time of hiring, staff will commit to working for the fall semester at a set schedule. Afterschool teachers will be paid between $10-$12 per hour depending on experience and responsibilities.

Requirements/Skills:
Afterschool teachers will hold a high school diploma or equivalent, preferably with college enrollment or degree in field related to education or child care. Experience working with school-aged children is required, and classroom teaching experience is preferred. Knowledge of the Dorchester community and Vietnamese culture is strongly preferred, and ability to work in a culturally sensitive manner with diverse communities is required. Knowledge of Vietnamese, Spanish, French, Haitian Creole or Cape Verdean Creole language is a plus, but no previous knowledge of a foreign language is necessary.

Job Responsibilities:

I. Training: All teachers will participate in training prior to the start of the program in addition to helping out at our parent orientation meeting on October 1st, and will be required to attend continuing staff meetings and trainings held on a monthly basis throughout the year to address changing needs of the program and the students.

II. Academics: Each day, teachers will be responsible for formal and informal academic instruction in a large group format. Teachers will design and implement age-appropriate lessons with the support of VietAID staff that aligns with Common Core learning standards. Teachers will assist with homework daily, ensuring that all homework is complete and correct.

III. Enrichment and Recreation Activities: Each day, teachers will also supervise recreational and enrichment activities. Teachers will be responsible for planning activities and ensuring that they are safe and age-appropriate. Teachers will also accompany and chaperone students on off-site trips (library, gym, pool, etc.).

IV. Safety and Behavior Management: VSPY implements a Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports system that must be followed by all staff. Teachers must maintain the VSPY Classroom Philosophy that encourages curiosity and freedom to explore topics in which the students are interested. Teachers must uphold the highest safety precautions at all times, including but not limited to, providing students with direct instruction on safety procedures, re-teaching as necessary, and holding groups back from activities if they are not safe.

V. Supervising volunteers and teen employees: The afterschool program will have volunteers and/or high school employees who will be under the supervision of teachers. Teachers will be responsible for helping them fulfill job duties and acting as supportive mentors, allowing them to have a role in shaping the quality of the program. Teachers will also be responsible for communicating regularly with their direct supervisor to ensure a strong support system for our teens.

VI. Tracking and Evaluation: Teachers will track and evaluate progress of students daily. This may be done electronically using Google Drive, so prior experience with Google Spreadsheets is helpful.

VII. Additional Responsibilities: Teachers will oversee snack and break times to ensure student safety. Additional responsibilities can included but are not limited to, walking students from the bus to program and assisting with events like the parent orientation, staff meetings, family potlucks, check-ins with Youth Director etc. Teachers will generally assist the Youth Director in the administration of the program and will be expected to perform duties outside of their direct classroom commitments.
