VietAID is running an afterschool youth program for seventy five students in 1st through 8th grade for the academic year 2016-2017. We are seeking responsible, caring and enthusiastic people to serve as educators for our program. We provide daily snacks, homework tutoring, games, recreation and enrichment activities for our students. We are located in the Vietnamese-American Community Center at 42 Charles St. in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood.

Job Hours, Pay Rate, and Dates:
The program will run from Monday October 3rd, 2016 – May 26th, 2017 on days when Boston Public Schools are in session and training begins the week of September 19th-September 23rd. Staff shifts are generally from 3:00pm-6:00pm, with occasional flexible hours for our monthly required staff meetings and prep time. Teachers will work minimum two to maximum five days per week, depending on staffing and availability. At the time of hiring, staff will commit to working for the fall semester at a set schedule. Afterschool teachers will be paid between $10-$12 per hour depending on experience and responsibilities.

Requirements/Skills:
Afterschool teachers will hold a high school diploma or equivalent, preferably with college enrollment or degree in field related to education or child care. Experience working with school-aged children is required, and classroom teaching experience is preferred. Knowledge of the Dorchester community and Vietnamese culture is strongly preferred, and ability to work in a culturally sensitive manner with diverse communities is required. Knowledge of Vietnamese, Spanish, French, Haitian Creole or Cape Verdean Creole language is a plus, but no previous knowledge of a foreign language is necessary.

Job Responsibilities:

I. Training: All teachers will participate in training prior to the start of the program in addition to helping out at our parent orientation meeting on October 1st, and will be required to attend continuing staff meetings and trainings held on a monthly basis throughout the year to address changing needs of the program and the students.

II. Academics: Each day, teachers will be responsible for formal and informal academic instruction in a large group format. Teachers will design and implement age-appropriate lessons with the support of VietAID staff that aligns with Common Core learning standards. Teachers will assist with homework daily, ensuring that all homework is complete and correct.

III. Enrichment and Recreation Activities: Each day, teachers will also supervise recreational and enrichment activities. Teachers will be responsible for planning activities and ensuring that they are safe and age-appropriate. Teachers will also accompany and chaperone students on off-site trips (library, gym, pool, etc.).

IV. Safety and Behavior Management: VSPY implements a Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports system that must be followed by all staff. Teachers must maintain the VSPY Classroom Philosophy that encourages curiosity and freedom to explore topics in which the students are interested. Teachers must uphold the highest safety precautions at all times, including but not limited to, providing students with direct instruction on safety procedures, re-teaching as necessary, and holding groups back from activities if they are not safe.

V. Supervising volunteers and teen employees: The afterschool program will have volunteers and/or high school employees who will be under the supervision of teachers. Teachers will be responsible for helping them fulfill job duties and acting as supportive mentors, allowing them to have a role in shaping the quality of the program. Teachers will also be responsible for communicating regularly with their direct supervisor to ensure a strong support system for our teens.

VI. Tracking and Evaluation: Teachers will track and evaluate progress of students daily. This may be done electronically using Google Drive, so prior experience with Google Spreadsheets is helpful.

VII. Additional Responsibilities: Teachers will oversee snack and break times to ensure student safety. Additional responsibilities can included but are not limited to, walking students from the bus to program and assisting with events like the parent orientation, staff meetings, family potlucks, check-ins with Youth Director etc. Teachers will generally assist the Youth Director in the administration of the program and will be expected to perform duties outside of their direct classroom commitments.
